Sudhir Choudhrie: made several significant achievements in business
Sudhir Choudhrie was born in New Delhi, India, on the 25th of November 1932. He attended the Doon School and later studied Economics at St. Stephen’s College at Delhi University before moving to Britain for his post-graduate studies. He worked as an economist for the World Bank, and in 1966 Choudhrie moved to London, where he became one of the first Indian businessmen to work outside India.
His Achievements
During his long career, Sudhir Choudhrie has made several significant achievements in business. After the break-up of the textile import and export companies, he moved into the property industry, establishing his own company: Choudhrie Properties (London) Ltd. Businesses like this were very new in London at the time, and Choudhrie was at the forefront of developing real estate into a serious asset class. In 1978 Choudhrie set up Chaudhry International in partnership with a former United States Air Force officer John Conte, who had been working as a pilot in India and Pakistan.
In the early 1980s, Sudhir Choudhrie joined the then-number-one political party, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), and contributed to some of the party’s most controversial issues, such as communal riots, national security, and religious conversions. His support for the BJP made him highly unpopular with many of his west London suppliers, but these businesses are now closed.

He was part of the Indian business delegation with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, which helped arrange a barter trade deal between India and Iran, which involved the sale of Indian sugar in exchange for Iranian oil. This deal was made even after the Shah had been exiled and when democratic elections had been brought to Iran.
Sudhir has now built an enviable reputation on his principles and transparency. “A lot of investors are attracted to Sudhir because his credentials as a person are impeccable,” says Uday Dasgupta, director at DSC Financial Advisers. Sudhir has made a fortune in the property industry and is active as an investor. His support for the BJP was controversial but vindicated by the party’s success in India’s national election.
