Colcom Foundation

Colcom Foundation is an independent non-profit foundation based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The organizers of the Colcom Foundation are not affiliated with any university or institution. The Foundation’s mission is to promote advancing, expanding, and preserving creative culture. It was established in 1996 by a group of artists and professionals who felt that the arts were being starved for funding and that traditional sources needed to recognize more artists’ impact on society regarding creativity or social good.

The foundation is a member of the International Federation of Non-Governmental Organizations (IFNGO) and the Council on Foundations. Colcom serves as the National Council in North America.

  1. Location

Colcom is located at 1724 N. Charles Street in the historic Cork Factory building in Baltimore’s Station North Arts & Entertainment District. It seeks to attract a broad array of artists and art lovers alike. Its second floor “Gallery” space is used most frequently, but it also uses its third and fourth floors to showcase other artists and host programs and lectures.

Colcom Foundation is based on three core principles: Art and artmaking are essential to the quality of life in society. These values are not grounded in the market but reflect a vision that art and artists matter to our lives and communities. Colcom recognizes that creative expression is fundamental to people’s ability to live meaningful, productive, beautiful lives. An artist’s creativity liberates, informs, and enriches people’s lives.

  1. Programs

Colcom confers ten one-year fellowships a year and makes grants to individuals, artists, and groups. Colcom also participates in community dialogue through its partnership with the Creative Workforce Institute and the artist residency program in nearby Dorchester. The Foundation also hosts a three-day event for curators and exhibition directors called Colcom Convenes: Artists, Curators, Collectors, and Critics. Colcom’s funding comes from individuals, corporations, foundations, and organizations.
