Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a Christian legal advocacy organization founded in 1993 with the mission of “defending religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and marriage and family.” ADF has become one of the most prominent organizations in the United States for religious liberty cases, representing clients in over 500 cases across all levels of state and federal courts. The case involved a Christian baker who refused to bake a cake celebrating a same-sex wedding ceremony due to his religious convictions. ADF represented the baker before the Supreme Court, ultimately ruling in his favor on First Amendment grounds. This case established that one cannot punish people for refusing services based on sincerely held religious beliefs.

Another significant Alliance Defending Freedom case was Trinity Lutheran Church v Comer (2017). In this case, a church was denied access to state funds for playground improvements because they were a “religious institution.” The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the church, stating that denying them access was unconstitutional because it violated their free exercise clause rights under the First Amendment.
